Michigan Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Sept. 3.
In a meeting held last week, Michigan Chamber Director of Tax Policy & Regulatory Affairs, Dan Papineau, urged Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens (D-Rochester Hills) to continue her support of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) – the new trade agreement reached nearly a year ago to replace NAFTA. In order to finalize the agreement, Congress must formally agree to its terms, which has yet to happen. Papineau and other members of the Chamber Federation, including the US Chamber, encouraged Rep. Stevens to act aggressively and urge Congressional leadership in Washington, DC, to bring the agreement to the floor for a vote.
The new trade agreement will support mutually beneficial trade leading to freer markets, fairer trade, and robust economic growth in North America. Alongside the US Chamber, the Michigan Chamber has been a strong advocate for USMCA’s adoption.
Congresswoman Stevens has been a strong and early supporter of the agreement and was optimistic that the agreement will be finalized soon. Rep. Stevens was only one of 14 Democratic members of Congress – and the only Democratic member from the Great Lakes Regions – to sign a letter requesting USMCA be brought to the floor for a vote.
